On January 1st I posted on Holistic Nutritional Habits and we do know that dietary habits should begin at a very young age, you may wonder with aging is it too late to change? I was able to control my weight, not my ideal weight, for about 10 years I didn’t change a whole lot in size. Why now?
Then I was hit with Adrenal Fatigue and I became exhausted and with lifestyle changes I chose yoga. Yoga and breathing have been my medicine, but I forgot the importance of a good sweat.
If you are exercising excessively you may need to consider your eating habits. This doesn’t mean I went for a run today and burned x-amount of calories so I deserve those chips, a bar, or takeout because when I was running I heard this a lot. Another excuse for eating this kind of food would be, I am pregnant and eating for two! We all heard it and we are conditioning our brains and the people around us to believe this to be true and our little ones are listening.
Obesity is a result of lifestyle habits and they can help or hinder us for life and a challenge to change but we can change! By understanding how and when we eat is as important as what we eat.
Do you know that overeating (that feeling that most of us are feeling right now after the Christmas gorging, it should be very fresh in our minds) eating late at night or even eating too many different foods at a meal or at a social can weaken our digestive functions and this makes it much easier to gain weight? The feeling of gaining weight, the thoughts that come with it takes a hit on our self-respect and loving who we are, and this can become daunting and the reality is reaching for pills, baking soda and tums is a slippery slope and yes if you get heartburn you need it, but with healthier habits you should be able to drop this as well!
Not hitting on parents, or my parents, or myself but overeating at meals and snacking between meals are common eating problems and often these are habits that have been picked up from our family members during our developmental years. We believe our children constantly need snacks in front of the tv, while playing, snacks in the stroller and whenever we need them to be quiet we feed them. This does happen with kindness and love I may add.
Why is our emotional state so tied into our eating habits? How did we get here, gorging to make us feel good? A tub of ice cream will not help our problems only cause more health problems and unwanted thoughts. Emotional eating is a disorder and it is a real-life problem and with the correct tools this can be fixed.
We eat food for many reasons than hunger or the quantity that our bodies need. We associate food with love, prosperity, emotional satisfaction, security, social interactions, movies, coffee/tea dates, holidays and the list to go on!
What happens when we lose weight, the shift in our mind, our attitude changes, emotions brighten, and we seem to carry ourselves with more confidence and we all know that we are easier to love?
We can change unhealthy habits and become healthier in the process! We can gain seventeen healthy habits in 2018. I would love to teach you how!
Today, I would suggest for you to put yourself on an eating schedule that works best with you and your family and make it a practice to only eat at the table and really chew your food and ask yourself some mindful questions. Statistics have proven that many carbs and junk food that we eat, we are not even fond of the taste when we become mindful. We get more of a love sensation of healthy fruits, veggies, and lean protein and that is what we enjoy the most, but I do realize some have to inquire the taste because for many years we tell ourselves we don’t like fruits and veggies and that’s what is programmed!
Recently I was eating a chocolate bar and I decided to really pay attention to eating this bar mindfully. As I was chewing the chocolate bar and really being mindful I noticed the chocolate being a little stale, not fresh, really sweat, my thoughts were wondering about calories and sugar and as you can imagine the bar wasn’t as enjoyable as gobbling it down. I decided to look at the label and in shock I noticed the calories, sugar but mostly I had just eaten a chocolate bar that I had just purchased, and it was outdated by four months and this is our food for thought for today, how many times do we eat food so quickly, in front of the computer, tv and chatting with family and friends that its gone before actually tasting it and then our brain is asking for more!
Let’s eat mindfully and make this a nutritional habit, a practice starting today! Because according to some doctors, eating more mindfully actually re-wires the brain and restores intuitive wisdom around eating. My interest in holistic nutrition is in eating the correct foods to think clearly, control fears, reduce stress and anxiety and mostly to maintain a more positive relationship with food and the bonus will be a healthier body weight!
